Floor preparation for underfloor heating

What goes under the heating matters as much as the heating itself. Without insulation, a lot of the heat goes down into the subfloor instead of up into the room. The floor warms up slowly, struggles to reach temperature and costs more to run.

Insulation and tile backer boards. XPS and cementitious tile backer boards go under electric mats and loose cable, or under tile finishes generally. They give a flat, stable, tileable surface and a thermal break in one layer.

Screed systems.

  • Reflective foil roll and grid membrane go over the main insulation. They make it easier to lay the pipe at an even spacing.
  • Edge insulation strip runs around the perimeter of the room so the screed can expand and contract without cracking.

Primer and adhesive.

  • A multi-surface primer stops porous subfloors drawing moisture from tile adhesive and levelling compound.
  • Spray contact adhesive bonds insulation and boards quickly with no mixing.
