Electric underfloor heating cable and uncoupling membrane

Loose electric heating cable is the flexible alternative to mats. It's laid by hand, so it can follow any room shape: around pedestals, into alcoves and across L-shaped and irregular floors where a mat would leave cold patches.

Loose cable (10W/m or 20W/m).

  • Clip the cable into uncoupling membrane at the spacing you need.
  • Wider spacing gives a lower output for well-insulated rooms.
  • Closer spacing gives more heat for conservatories and rooms that lose heat quickly.

Uncoupling membrane.

  • Bed the membrane into flexible tile adhesive.
  • Press the cable between the studs, then tile straight over.
  • It also isolates the tiles from movement in the subfloor, reducing the risk of cracked tiles and grout on timber floors and with large-format tiles.

In-screed cable (20W/m). For new floors, in-screed cable is laid within the screed, which stores and releases heat steadily. This suits larger areas and longer heating periods.

Every electric system needs a floor-sensing thermostat. A qualified electrician must make the final connection. Our loose cable vs mats guide explains which to choose.
