Underfloor Heating in the North East

From Tyneside flats and colliery terraces to Northumberland stone cottages and new estates around Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham and Teesside, we supply complete water and electric underfloor heating systems across the North East.

Designing for colder winters

The North East has some of England's coldest winter design temperatures, so heat loss matters more here. A good underfloor heating design starts with the room's heat loss, then picks pipe centres and flow temperature to match. In well-insulated rooms, 200mm centres are often enough. In older or colder rooms, 150mm or 100mm centres give more output. See underfloor heating heat output.

Common North East properties

  • Tyneside flats (upper and lower flats in one terrace) need low-height solutions upstairs. Overlay boards or joisted floor systems avoid a heavy screed on timber floors.
  • Colliery and stone terraces often have solid ground floors. Lifting and re-laying with insulation and screed gives the best result. Overlay is the alternative when the floor can't be dug out.
  • Rural Northumberland and County Durham homes are often off the gas grid. Underfloor heating paired with a heat pump is a natural replacement for oil or LPG.

Insulation first

Underfloor heating only works as well as the insulation beneath it. Without it, heat goes down into the ground instead of up into the room. Our insulation guide covers the thicknesses that suit each floor type.

Supply only, or supply and install

  • Supply only: Order by 12 noon for next working day delivery to most addresses in the North East. Delivery cost is shown at checkout.
  • Supply and install: we arrange installation through our approved installers, with MaxHeatUFH technical support on every job. As a guide, labour is £20/m² + VAT for clip rail and pipe clipped to insulation in screed, and £25/m² + VAT for other systems, including electric. Send an installation enquiry with your floor plans and we'll confirm the price.
  • Installers and builders: apply for a trade account for trade pricing on every order.

Grants

If you're fitting an air source heat pump, the government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme can help with the cost in England and Wales. Check the current grant amount and rules on GOV.UK before you budget.
