This Lake District home had suspended timber floors, which is common in older Cumbrian properties. A screed was never an option: it would have added too much weight and height to the joists. We supplied and installed a 22mm grooved chipboard underfloor heating system that goes straight onto the joists and acts as the structural deck.

The system
- Floor system: 22mm grooved chipboard UFH boards over the joists (joisted floor systems)
- Pipe: 16mm PERT-AL-PERT multilayer pipe
- Floor finish prep: 6mm cement cover boards over the heating boards, ready for tiles
- Controls: 4 Heatmiser neoAir wireless thermostats, plus app-controlled TRVs on the towel radiators
- App control: Everything linked through a Heatmiser neoHub

Why this build-up
Grooved chipboard gives a solid, flat floor with the pipe sitting in an aluminium-lined channel, so heat spreads evenly across the board rather than in stripes. The cement cover boards give a rigid, stable surface for tiling, which matters on a timber floor that can flex slightly.
Using wireless neoAir thermostats meant no new cable runs through the finished walls. Adding the towel radiator TRVs to the same neoHub means the homeowner controls every room, floor and radiator from one app.
