Warrington, Cheshire: screed downstairs, low-profile overlay upstairs

Foil-faced overlay board with UFH pipe

Most homes don't have the same floor construction on every storey. This Warrington project needed underfloor heating on both floors: a new concrete slab downstairs and a timber floor upstairs where a screed wasn't possible. We supplied two systems, both on the same pipe and manifold design.

The system

  • Ground floor: Pipe-in-screed, with 16mm PERT-EVOH pipe clipped directly to the insulation, ready for screeding
  • First floor: 20mm foil-faced overlay boards with 16mm PERT-EVOH pipe
  • Pipe: 16mm PERT-EVOH on both floors

Why two systems

Downstairs, a screed gives excellent heat transfer and thermal mass. Upstairs, a 20mm overlay adds very little height and responds quickly, which suits bedrooms that are heated for shorter periods. Using the same 16mm pipe on both floors keeps the design and the manifold connections simple.
