Cheshire barn conversion: in-screed underfloor heating for an air source heat pump

Pipe clipped to insulation ready for screed

Barn conversions are a perfect fit for underfloor heating: big open spaces, high ceilings and new insulated floor slabs. This Cheshire farm barn was being converted with an air source heat pump, so the floor had to be designed for low flow temperatures from the start.

The system

  • Floor system: Traditional pipe-in-screed, with the pipe clipped securely to high-performance insulation (in-screed systems)
  • Pipe: 16mm PEX-EVOH pipe
  • Pipe centres: 150mm throughout
  • Heat source: Air source heat pump

Designing for a heat pump

A heat pump is most efficient at low flow temperatures, so the floor has to deliver enough heat from cooler water. Closer pipe centres (150mm rather than 200mm) put more pipe in each square metre and give more heat output from the same water temperature. In a screed, that heat spreads evenly and the slab's thermal mass keeps rooms steady.

The installation was carried out by one of our approved installers, with MaxHeatUFH design and technical support throughout.
